Stuff I've consumed
we need to talk about kevin (2011)
interesting documentary about ezra miller . 43 buckets of red paint
watched jojo rabbit (2019)
was super entertaining but im left wondering what space a non-jewish director has in making a story such as this, given the heavy topic. i understand that it's not such a serious drama, could even be considered a light family comedy, but having some of the death scenes felt a bit too brief. and i dont know what was the point really of humanising certain people - i just wish some characters were developed a bit deeper. 45 rabbits
watched wasp (2003)
a short film about a working class mother finding love. i dont really know what the artists intentions were with this one.....but was still sat
watched La Libertad (2017)
a short doco about an ancient indigenous textile art and domestic freedom. poignant, melancholic and contemplative. 100 threads and emblems
watched Fallen Leaves (2023)
a finnish, working class romantic dramedy. tranquil and easy to watch with chefs kiss cinematography, direction and set design. 89 stolen frozen meals
Christine - this was a hard watch in a lot of ways. i felt some stuff was a bit lacking in the characterisation though but also in some ways such a good representation of depression (the lashing out at people, not just being bed-ridden).
watched, The Favourite - it was fine. fun to watch, pretty dark and sad though. 17 rabbits
watched Better Call Saul - my my my, a bittersweet ribbon on the gift of the breaking bad universe. right, some mid-seasons were a bit boring and slow, and i have to admit, i really started to not care about the chuck situation BD (before death), but hellOOOOOOO season 6. ooft, each episode was like a bullet to my heart, and i'm completely bleeding out on emotioNNNNNNNNNNN. that ending, so melancholic, yet so....serene? i'm happy it ended in the way that it was perfect, and it needed no more, no less. rating: 6 bottles of tequila.
watched, Saltburn - incredibly sensual and fun, barry keoghan has incredible rizz but has a face that's so difficult to read. although it was extreme in a lot of ways, i still was left somehow wishing for more....substance? fucking over a rich family feels more like an individualist-anarchist fantasy rather than an actual critique of class (not that it doesn't have any at all, but i just felt it was rather lacking). i saw how themes of obsession, desire and sexuality were interlinked with the longing for wealth, but the resulting depravity only going as far as the grave scene? idk, i'm not convinced. "how could you want more", you ask? idk, i am comparing it to movies like parasite and even snow piercer, i feel like the setting and set-up was a bit better executed. or maybe i'm too internet poisoned. idk what it is i want, but i'll let you know when i get it. nevertheless, i had a lot of fun with the movie though. scene by scene, i was hooked. rating: three thums up
oh, and, normalise having sex on periods lol. it's messy, not dirty.
watched Dune: Part One (2021) - anyone who knows me knows how much i love this movie and the unreasonable number of times i watched it. rating: 10 billion solaris
watched Dune: Part Two (2024) - i didnt like it as much as the first one but the visuals were amazing mamma mia chefs kiss. messiah better work its whole wussy (Worm pussy) out. rating: 8 billion solaris
watched Eric (tv series, 2024) - very entertaining and gripping. everytime i watch a piece of media with benedict cumberbatch, im blown away by his acting, but i notice he likes to play, or is maybe typecast, into these asshole characters that have some kind of come-uppance. i think he can do more than that. anyway i also loved the set design, i appreciated the weaving of politics (the disenfranchisment of new york's unhoused community, homosexuality) although it teetered on being shoe-horned in, and the mothers (both!) were severely underdeveloped - we see a decent backstory for most of the men who were main characters here, but the mothers seemed to be just the fretting mother role whos whole live revolves around their child. when we do away with this??? anyway, overall very satisfying, if not bittersweet, story and ending. rating: 65 bottles of alcohol
watched The Suicide Squad (2021) - amazing amazing 10s 10s 10s across the board. anti-imperialist, largely anarchist (in the true philosophical meaning of the word) movie, giving the boys (i havent watched this), and everything it was meant to be in the first movie, no goofing around but fully goofy goobered up. wtf john cena can act. rating: 100% the existential need to care for the humans and communities around you and to do the right thing even if it costs you your life.
watched Deadpool v. Wolverine (2024) - a self-fellating fox piece brought to you by people who cant move on with their lives, or be anything but themselves bc they think they're so great, or actors who could unfortunately do with a check. passable action scenes, cool but one-dimensional villain, a waste of lores and universes built from spectacular movies/tv shows (loki and logan). like, when i watch logan i am going to think of X24 being in this movie man wtf. rating: 2/10
watched Alien: Romulus (2024) - it was very fun, and a nice take on a franchise that i think, at this point, should just die because no one can do it right. HATED the thing at the end, felt like an (spoiler) alt version of alien: resurrection. idk why these studios insist on having more aliens to raise the stakes or smth ? also felt like more action than horror. i liked the android stuff, but it also felt distracting at some point i couldn't tell if it wanted to be more about androids or aliens, and in that vein i think prometheus and covenant did those better. rating : 84 face huggers
listened to Romance, by Fontaines D.C. (2024) - had to listen a few times to get into it, i think the track order really fucked it over. best song: death kink, incredible guitar tone. also some songs i feel just didn't really fit the album, i wish we had a whole album of songs like here's the thing, death kink and starburster. my expectations were pretty measured going into it i think, especially because in the modern world was the latest single and i thought it was kinda boring.
watched Ready Or Not (2019) - more than your average being chased around film, incredibly fun and intense watch. rating: full pack of cards
watched Late Night With The Devil - perhaps an over-produced amateur movie, or a budget high-end film, this was a 90 minute thriller with a predictable twist that was fun to get to nevertheless. i liked the use of classic horror tropes with small subversions here and there. i love david dastmalchian. rating: 11 cursed daggers
watched Ladybird (2017) - cried tears, way too relatable. i think it would have benefitted from being longer, more lingering shots, more pauses, just some room to breathe, but other than that it was a beautiful blossoming movie. rating: 10 prom dressers
watched Hereditary (2018) - there's a reason i don't watch horror, this is a big one. terrifying at every moment, my heart was constantly stuck in my throat. rating: :( 38 heads,,,
watched The Bear (S1-S3) - wow i love anxiety! i love generational trauma! i love it when media shows how difficult it is to move past it and how easy it is to run over the same ground again and again! people bitching on season 3 can't appreciate character analysis . 89 plates of spagbol
watched, Bodkin (tv show) the last two eps really showed how good this series could have been. idk why people said it was corny, i thought the plot was good. but it sucks that it couldn't decide whether it wanted to be a normal comedy, black comedy or completely serious. none of the black comedy bits were dark enough for it to count as black comedy, and the comedic music just ruined the tone. impeccable acting from everyone, but i was particularly struck by Siobhán Cullen and Robyn Cara. i thought the characters were teetering on being rich, but they just didn't quite get there. the plot also suffered from doing too many sub-plots when they should have just focus on like the two main plot points (spoiler here: i thought the eel thing was already too much). anyway, 6 pints of guiness
watched, Ex Machina exploding head emote. true..... . passed my reality of the turing test/10
watched Come and See (1985) - yeesh, this was definitely a hard watch. props to the actor though, how could anyone emote in such a way? really obvious use of animals as metaphors, but it was especially troubling to watch given the lack of animal rights at the time. i would agree that it definitely lacked plot, and on theme with animals, at some point it just felt like i was at a zoo exhibit, where the astrocities seemed more like a spectacle than a warning. but maybe the director was just showing it like how it was - what does this say about my interpretation? rating: 1 dead cow :(
watched Poor Things - ayayayyyyyy what a cute movie this was. stellar performance by everyone. something about a cast of only 3-4 main characters making things super intimate. couldn't help relating to a lot to bella's exploration of her sexuality. rating: 20 portugese egg tarts.
watching The Sopranos - let me tell you now: this is the blueprint, this is the OG this is THE GOLD STAR of television. everything i've watched i can tell gets a lot of inspo from this show. exposition in the form of psych visits? done. corny. by TODAY'S standards. but the sopranos being the tv drama to first do it, makes it hit different. and i think it should be the only one to do it un-ironically, tbh.
currently on S2, but my rating so far: 10 bejewelled thumbs up
UPDATE (2024-04) Season 2 kinda slow....what's up. don't like the sister. miss that psychiatrist bro . UPDATE (2024-09) Kind of a clumsy season, sometimes doesn't seem to know where to go and meanders around where it needs to be, but my goodness when it hits. The execution I think had a lot to be desired, metaphorically and thematically but honestly it was the first of it's kind of show so I'm going easy on it. 7 fbi agents
watched, Enemy (2013) - i thought it was kinda boring,,,maybe too arthouse for me lol . one half of a twin
